A very famous furniture store closed its doors and disappeared, defaulting on hundreds of customers

In February last year, a traditional furniture store became a topic in the media after a scandal involving the end of its activities. This is because the company closed its doors, deleted its social media accounts and even defaulted on hundreds of customers who had purchased products.

For those who don’t know, we are talking about the Sofá Design store, in Salvador. According to information released by the ‘Metro1’ portal, the company, in addition to “disappearing from the map”, deleting its social networks, left a non-existent telephone number for contact. The company became the target of complaints in 8 cities in Brazil.

The store in question operated in Alameda das Espatódeas, in the Caminho das Árvores neighborhood, and closed its doors, deleted its social networks and did not respond to any of the customers who had purchased at the store and did not receive the products. Customers reported at the time that they made purchases worth more than R$4,000, and as they were waiting for delivery, it took them a while to notice the default.

Reports say that the only satisfaction customers received from the store was a notice placed on the door of the Sofá Design store. The message said: “Dear customer, store closed to change showroom, we are offering online service via WhatsApp or email”. However, callers stated that the phone number offered did not work.

“I contacted the seller to buy two more seats and realized that the message was not getting through. So I looked for the store’s Instagram, which no longer existed. On the other hand, I found an account that denounced the coup on a national scale. I despaired,” said a customer named Ingrid, to the Metro1 portal.

“There are people who lost up to R$27 thousand”, reveals Ingrid. “I think the records of people who bought from this store in Salvador haven’t sunk in yet, we discovered everything recently”, she adds. When trying to contact you by phone, customers hear the following message: “This phone is blocked for this type of call”, says the answering machine message.

More on the subject

The Sofá Design Group lawyer stated at the time that customers who did not receive the furniture purchased in Salvador (BA) would be reimbursed. According to Sâmoa Martins, the victims would receive the products or the amount spent at the time of purchase.

The store stated at the time that the services were being provided online, however, no further information was released about the outcome of the case.

In contact with ‘Metro1’, the inspection director of Procon in Bahia, Iratan Vilas Boas, informed that the agency is aware of the complaints and is in the process of investigating the company Sofá Design.

“In these cases, there is a purchase and sale contract that is not being fulfilled in relation to the delivery of the purchased products. The Consumer Law Code obliges the parties to fully comply with signed contracts. When one of the parties fails to comply, it is up to the injured party to seek rights”, explains Iratan.

In total, more than 100 customers are reporting that they were victims of the scam, as they did not receive the items at their homes despite having made payment and are unable to contact the supplier.

Did Sofá Design go bankrupt?

According to a post on its Instagram profile, Grupo Sofá Design reported that it would be undergoing “organizational restructuring with the aim of overcoming the deep economic crisis caused by the intense rise in the price of production inputs and the rapid rise in interest rates”.

It is worth noting that the company is currently in judicial recovery, which was granted on March 21, 2023, in the 22nd Civil Court of the District of Natal/RN. Check out the company’s latest update on the matter:
