Disappointing weekend for Williams

-

The Williams team had a very disappointing weekend at the Formula 1 Miami GP, with Alex Albon finishing only in P19 and Logan Sargeant having to retire after being hit by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen.

Sven Smeets, sporting director: “It was a very difficult Sunday for everyone. We started the race well with both cars close to each other. We stopped both cars early to stay aggressive, as we knew it would be a very close fight. In one of those fights, Logan was eliminated by (Kevin) Magnussen, although it was very frustrating, we are happy that Logan was completely fine and was released. The accident caused a safety car to come in at completely the wrong time for the race for Alex, who did a great job trying to defend himself with older tires, but it was impossible to maintain the position as in his struggle he suffered damage to the floor. This really slowed him down a few laps before the end of the race. A day to quickly forget, but we are looking at Imola where we must bring some performance to the car,” he concluded.

Albon: “We struggled with grip all weekend and then we tried to do a long run on the tires, which didn’t work. It’s probably one of the most challenging races I’ve had with the team, so we need to go away and understand why it was so difficult. True, we didn’t have a bad pace, but the cars behind us were all on new tires, so I was the support for everyone else and you can’t really hold off cars with newer tires than you for more than 20 laps. . If we weren’t the last car we might have been fine, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. When I locked the wheels I was trying to defend myself, and we now know that some damage to the floor in a previous corner caused this. A very difficult weekend, but we will look to Imola where the team will have some small updates,” he added.

Sargeant: “A very disappointing way to end my home GP. It was a decent race until the incident. From what I could tell, Alex and I were losing a bit of pace today, but we still kept fighting. However, it was a positive weekend from the moment I got into the car in FP1. I managed to get almost everything out of it, but there are still little things to improve on, but I generally don’t feel like there’s much left this weekend. I’m feeling good and ready to move forward now into a European racing season,” he concluded.
