Nothing wrong with that. Fonseca is, indeed, fascinating and, now that he is achieving impressive results among professionals, he is already attracting the attention of the entire planet. And that’s great, including for Thiago Wild, the current number 1 in Brazil, who currently occupies 63rd place in the world rankings – the best position of his career. While the spotlight continues to be on the Rio sensation, the Paraná native continues to evolve and record consistent results.

This Friday, Wild beat the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, number 29 in the world, by 6/4 and 6/4 and advanced to the third round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid. More than this: it is the third Masters 1000 in which Thiago reaches the third round (in Indian Wells and Miami, he also had to pass qualifying). In this streak, he has defeated three top 30s: Karen Khachanov (#15 in IW), Taylor Fritz (#13 in Miami) and, now, Musetti (#29).

Free of physical problems and working in an environment that has put his career back on track (although there are still personal issues pending in court – read more here), Wild is able to play the tennis he likes to play – aggressive, controlling the points – with a more frequently and better manages bad moments. Therefore, the good moments appear more frequently, and the bad parts are minimized. The results are appearing.

His next step in Madrid is the biggest possible test in the Spanish capital. The opponent in the third round will be Carlos Alcaraz, Wimbledon champion, former number 1 in the world (current #3) and hungry for victory, playing against his compatriots. The type of environment that Wild likes and that will take him, even if perhaps only momentarily, out of Fonseca’s shadow.

” Alcaraz needs no comments, one of the best we have nowadays, but as I always say, it’s game by game, we have to get on the court and compete. Whoever is better on the day, wins”said the Brazilian even before he was sure that the Spaniard would be his opponent.
