JN flies over the areas of Porto Alegre most affected by the flood

This Tuesday (7), reporter Cristiano Dalcin flew over areas of Porto Alegre to show some of the most dramatic situations in the city seen from above.

In the Historic Center, the building is the Porto Alegre Public Market, in a region that was heavily affected by the flood of 1941. Because of it, a wall was built next to an avenue to try to prevent the river from reaching there. Now, we see the entire region – even with the wall, even with the entire flood containment system that was built in the 1970s – completely flooded.

It is the busiest region of the city, the Historic Center. There are many historic buildings there that are underwater, squares… It is an isolated region. There are a lot of people wanting information on when they will be able to travel through Porto Alegre again. Now only by boat. In the Center, the boat is the only means of transport.

Next door is also the Fourth District region, which is now being revitalized. It is one of the most affected regions of the city. New buildings are being built there, but it is also inaccessible at the moment.

The team at National Newspaper flew over the region of the Guaíba islands. There are 16 islands in the lake and some are densely populated. The water is on the roofs of the houses. There are many people still waiting for help. There is a lot of convincing work, because there are people who prefer to stay, afraid of looting, afraid of leaving what they have at home or even their pets.. In a house, the animals are on the roof.

O National Newspaper flew over the edge of Guaíba, the city’s main tourist attraction. The place became the rescue zone. There are a lot of volunteers working there and going to the region of the islands of Eldorado and Guaíba. As news of the rescues in Guaíba reaches the entire country, people from all regions and all states go there. Boats are arriving, lots of donations and the work doesn’t stop in the region.

The bus station has been completely flooded since last week. There is no forecast for the resumption of road services, for the buses to leave. The city region is completely isolated, as is the city’s airport, which is expected to remain closed until the end of May without receiving planes, without departures or takeoffs.

It looks like a large lake, but the area is the runway at Salgado Filho Airport. Departure and take-off runway, a large lake, an extension of Lake Guaíba. Lake and track, or what’s left of the track at the moment in Salgado Filho. Porto Alegre Airport completely flooded too. What was left of the runway, the end of the runway, a few meters that had not yet been covered by water. Now, the rest is completely submerged. There is a part of the track that was not flooded. A rather small section. In front there is a lake.

“It’s impossible to remain indifferent to this, because it’s our city. And we see it this way…”, laments reporter Cristiano Dalcin.
