Former porn actress Stormy Daniels, who former US President Donald Trump is accused of bribing during the 2016 presidential campaign, appeared in a New York court to testify in the case against Trump.
The former president also faces three other criminal cases, but this is the first to go to trial.
This is the first time that the former porn actress speaks to the court about the case.
In his testimony, which he gave as a witness, Daniels reaffirmed having had an affair with Donald Trump, which he denies. She said they both met in 2006 during a golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California.
At the time, according to what the former porn actress said in her statement, Trump invited her to dinner. She denied it, but the former president’s bodyguards gave her a card with the then businessman’s phone number. Later, encouraged by her manager, she decided to accept the invitation, which led to their sexual encounter in a hotel, according to Tuesday’s testimony.
Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, continued to testify until this report was published. Donald Trump participated in the session in which the former porn actress gave testimony, in a New York court. He was already in the room when she entered. The two did not speak to each other.
Donald Trump is criminally accused of falsifying accounting records to cover up a payment of US$130,000 (about R$657,000) to porn actress Stormy Daniels. The payment would have occurred in the final stretch of the 2016 presidential campaign.
Prosecutors say Trump obscured the true nature of these payments and falsely recorded them as legal expenses. He denies this and has previously pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal charges of falsifying business records. Trump, who is already campaigning for elections, was forced to appear in court during the sessions.
