Corinthians lose to Argentinos Juniors, complete four fast games and leave the lead in the South American Championship

-

O Corinthians lost to Argentinos Juniors 1-0 on Tuesday night, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, in a game valid for the 3rd round of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana. With the setback for the reserves of the team led by Pablo Guede, Timão completed four matches without a win this season and left the lead in the continental tournament.

Corinthians fell to 2nd place in group F of the South American Championship, with four points. Argentinos took the lead, with six units. Racing-URU (four) and Nacional-PAR (zero) face each other on Thursday, in Paraguay, and will complete the round.

Corinthians’ next game will be against Fluminense, at Neo Química Arena. The ball rolls on Sunday, at 4 pm (Brasília time). Argentinos Juniors will face Vélez Sarsfield, on the same day, in the semi-final of the Professional League Cup.

The game

Corinthians’ first half was worrying. The team was leaked in the first attack by Argentinos Juniors, with Gastón Verón, who received a pass from Viveros and got the better of Cássio.

The only most dangerous attack on Timão in the first half came in the 14th minute, with Pedro Henrique, who received a ball from Fausto Vera and headed the ball to Diego Rodriguez’s save. António Oliveira’s men dominated possession for a few moments, but were unable to be incisive.

The Argentine team almost expanded in the 42nd minute, with Viveros, whose shot was placed wide, passing close to Cássio’s goal.

Second time

Corinthians came back worse for the second stage. The team did not cope with the changes made by António Oliveira, and Argentinos Juniors got scared after just six minutes, with a shot from Perello.

At 13 minutes, Corinthians’ mission became even more thankless. Defender Raul Gustavo was sent off by referee Piero Maza after pushing one of the assistants and leaving the visitors with one less on the field.

Timão still had a chance in the 22nd minute, with a poorly directed shot by Fausto Vera, and a dangerous header by Cacá in stoppage time, but was unable to prevail due to the numerical disadvantage. The hosts were comfortable with the scenario in general, and just protected the result.
