Rio – Brazilian Lucas Chumbo won the title of “Gigantes de Nazaré”, a giant wave competition held in Nazaré, located in the district of Leiria, in Portugal. The surfer caught a wave of around 27 meters and could break the world record.

Lucas Chumbo surfed a wave of 27.01 meters, the biggest in the championship, and surpassed the mark of German Sebastian Steudtner, with a wave of 26.21 meters, last year. The measure is not yet official, as validation of the record depends on the World Surfing League (WSL) and Guinness.

Born in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Lucas Chumbo is the brother of João Chianca, known as Chumbinho. Last year, Chumbinho was fifth overall in the World Surfing League (WSL) and guaranteed a place in the 2024 Paris Games. He is recovering from an injury after suffering a serious fall on a wave in Hawaii.

In addition to being known for surfing giant waves, Lucas Chumbo participated in the 20th edition of Big Brother Brasil, in 2020, and was the first eliminated from the reality show. Another former BBB participant and giant wave specialist, Pedro Scooby also participated in “Gigantes de Nazaré” in 2024.
