Archaeologists found five human skeletons, missing hands and feet, outside a house occupied by the Nazi commander Hermann Göring in the city of Kętrzyn, in Poland. The information was released by the German magazine Der Spiegel this Monday, 29.

The discovery was made by Latebra Foundation, focused on recovering lost works of art, which has been operating at the site for years. The residence was part of a complex of bunkers nicknamed “Toca do Lobo”, one of the bases used by Adolf Hitler during the Second World War (1939-1945).

“The uniqueness of this discovery lies in the fact that the bodies were found on the premises of the best guarded complex in the Third Reich,” highlighted the statement.

The bodies are believed to be those of three adults, a teenager and a newborn. The exact age of the remains is not yet known, as dating analyzes have not been completed. No traces of clothing were found. They were laid out next to burnt boards and remnants of ancient sewage infrastructure.

In an interview with American broadcaster CNN, Adrian Kostrzewa, a member of the foundation’s board of directors, explained that archaeologists thought they were excavating a bathroom. First, they found ashes and a burned key. He said that “there are many theories [sobre] why they have no hands and feet”, but the results of the police investigation have not yet been released. “Right now, it’s very difficult to say.”

About Toca do Lobo

The Wolf’s Lair was the headquarters of the Nazi Eastern Front, considered one of the largest in Europe. It is located in a forest in the northwest of Poland, far from civilization. A fighter pilot during the First World War, Göring was a close friend of Adolf Hitler — the leader of Nazi Germany even stayed there for almost three years. There, he outlined Germany’s war plans, including the Jewish genocide.

The Latebra Foundation indicates that the fortress was destroyed in 1945, the year in which the Second World War came to an end, so that it would not be used as a base for the Soviet Union. A year earlier, Toca do Lobo witnessed Operation Valkyrie, in which German soldiers attempted to kill Hitler to seize power and negotiate an end to the conflict. The ruins have been cleaned and the site has been visited by tourists since 1959, but it is prohibited to enter the remains of the bunker.
