The 18-year-old is the sister of Gabriel Medinaworld surfing champion, and showed that skill in the sport runs in the family.
Currently, she competes in Challenger Series, access division to the Championship Tour (CT) of the WSL (World Surfing League). Even though she wanted to make her story, she stated in an interview with Lance recently that she likes the ‘weight’ of her surname.
“It’s an honor to represent this name, a burden because everyone has expectations, but it’s a great incentive to write my own story and work to get there,” he said.
When Sophia learned how to get on a board, Medina was already starting to compete in the CT. The surfer’s name is often associated with her brother’s, even by announcers at the main championships. However, these situations serve as motivation for the athlete to try not to be seen just as “Gabriel’s little sister”.
“I think having the surname Medina in surfing is amazing. Every championship I go to, they end up saying ‘Gabriel Medina’s sister’. I’m very proud to represent that name, but it just makes me want more to take my own name, the my own story,” he said.
“When an announcer arrives before the heat and says ‘Gabriel Medina’s sister’, I say ‘in this heat I’m going to prove that I’m not just Gabriel Medina’s little sister’. I’m competing, getting my results. I’m going places I used to go like Gabriel’s little sister just to watch and cheer, now as a real competitor”, celebrated the surfer.
