The opening of the fifth stage of the WSL in Bells Beach had high waves, a show by Gabriel Medina, Miguel Pupo reaching the round of 32 and a Brazilian double in heat 12. Medina’s show in the dispute against Liam O’Brien and Cole Houshmand was supported by his sister Sophia and Charles, Gabriel’s stepfather and former coach. He opened with a score of 8, responding to a 6.5 from the Australian. Gabriel started the wave with a floater, went on to a sequence of hits, finishing with powerful rips. Later, with 10 minutes to go, the Brazilian caught the best wave of the day and achieved a 9.33 to close the performance.

In the last heat of the men’s round, Ítalo Ferreira and Yago Dora got the better of the Portuguese Frederico Moraes and guaranteed themselves in the next phase. The elimination round takes place this morning from Monday to Tuesday and begins with Caio Ibelli facing Seth Moniz and wildcard Tully Wylie. Samuel Pupo and Deivid Silva face Moraes in the repechage. The women’s competition takes place after the men’s round one.
