The Fire Department statement highlights that any change to a property requires a new PPCI. “Until this is done, the project is in an irregular condition.”

Public Defender’s Office will investigate human rights violations

The DPE/RS (Public Defender’s Office of the State of Rio Grande do Sul) opened a file to investigate collective damages and human rights violations after the fire. In the morning, the public defender advisor Rodolfo Lorea Malhão, the coordinator of the Human Rights Reference Center (CRDH), Alessandra Quines Cruz, and the general ombudsman, Rodrigo de Medeiros Silva, were at the scene investigating the situation of the victims, families and other local and nearby residents.

In the afternoon, a meeting aimed to gather information about the operation of Pousadas Garoa and others associated with Porto Alegre City Hall. The meeting was attended by parliamentarians, social movements, victims, family members and people living on the streets.

Main bodies were commissioned to obtain the missing data. “We will seek answers as soon as possible, to identify all the residents of the inn where the fire occurred and the survivors, where they were relocated, if they went to safe locations”, said the director of the Center for Agrarian Defense and Housing (NUDEAM) , Renato Muñoz de Oliveira Santos.

CPI will be established in the City Council and the contracts will be investigated. “We all feel affected in terms of human dignity,” said councilor Abigail Pereira. “The City Hall needs to break this contract now. We cannot think that it is something that could happen anywhere”, defended councilor Jonas Reis.
