Hawaiian politicians voted on a project that makes the shaka a symbol of the state of Hawaii. Shaka is a gesture that is made by closing the fingers of the hand and raising the thumb and little finger, it has been seen by all of us, whether celebrating a goal from Ronaldinho Gaúcho to former president Barack Obama.

In the surfing community it is widely used as a sign of greeting, greeting, thanks, where the idea is to transmit a good vibe. This gesture is often accompanied by the word Aloha.

”I would describe it as a symbol of happiness,” said Glenn Wakai, who introduced the bill in the state Senate. If approved, it will be the United States’ first official gesture of state. Official symbols in America can project a state’s identity and protect its cultural heritage.

I particularly love these greetings, especially at this time when people barely look at each other when they pass by. I believe that gestures and words can create empathy and convey care to others. Maybe that’s why Hawaii has that atmosphere of happiness, peace, harmony and family involved. There it seems that things flow and from generation to generation they continue to perpetuate the culture and teachings.

The word Aloha is a clear example of this and how things will transform around you. Aloha is not only an expression, but also a lifestyle, of peace, harmony and balance of the Hawaiian people. There is a lot involved and it is difficult to even explain because it is something that comes from the soul and needs to be felt.

The way things come together there is fantastic. Another example are the traditional flowered shirts that are everywhere in the archipelago. In 1946, Honolulu County employees wore suits and ties, and in the warmer months everyone was allowed to wear sports shirts. The Hawaiian fashion industry, sensing an opportunity, developed flowered shirts with the idea that the local population would start wearing these shirts.

In 1966, the Bank of Hawaii allowed the use of flowered shirts on Fridays and as at that time the bank was frequented by many locals and tourists, it soon became an outfit that everyone wanted. The expression Aloha Friday was born.

Today it is almost impossible to go to Hawaii and not wear floral clothes, this has become popular around the world and the surfing community has always encouraged this.

It’s really cool to see something local becoming a symbol or custom of a place.

So imagine yourself contemplating a beautiful sunset, wearing flowery clothes, waving a shaka at someone and saying: Aloha.
