One in four women, during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, will have depression or anxiety disorder. They are becoming ill due to mental and physical overload. The statements were made by psychologist Carolina Ghizoni, during an event that discussed maternal mental health, held at the Court of Justice of Santa Catarina (TJSC) this Thursday (9/5). The meeting is an initiative of the Directorate of Health and Quality of Life (DSQV), of PJSC, in partnership with the Mothers of the Judiciary Program and is part of ReprogrAME-SE.

Carolina reinforced the importance of mothers being aware of their emotions and listed some signs of a possible problem. “When fatigue turns into apathy, when sadness turns into compulsive crying, when there is a loss of the ability to feel pleasure in daily activities that were previously considered pleasant, it is necessary to pay attention and ask for help,” she said.

One of the roots of the problem, according to the psychologist, lies in the multiple demands imposed on women, especially mothers, who need to handle professional and personal tasks, within a culture that credits women with being solely responsible for raising children.

For Carolina, it is necessary and urgent for tasks to be distributed in a more balanced way. Until this happens, women need support and here comes, according to her, the role of society as a whole, including institutions.

“At this point, on the part of the Judiciary, there is a great welcome”, said civil servant Danielle Cristina Novack, member of the intersectoral team of the Mothers of the Judiciary program. “We hold virtual meetings, by age group, and accompany women on this beautiful and challenging journey.”

At the opening of the event, the general administrative director of TJSC, Alexsandro Postali, reaffirmed PJSC’s commitment to breaking stigmas surrounding issues involving mental health. “We are an institution that is constantly maturing and evolving and is aware of its social responsibility. Taking care of mothers’ mental health means taking care of the well-being of the entire family and society as a whole,” he said.

Doctor Graciela de Oliveira Richter Schmidt, director of DSQV, took the same stance. “Our objective is to provide support so that women can be mothers, civil servants or judges, and that they can be whole.” Graciela read a message from retired judge Salete Sommariva, who, when invited to participate, was unable to attend: “You transformed something that was seen as commonplace into something important, and I feel part of this crusade of light and wisdom, as I have followed you since the beginning”.

In partnership with the Public Policy Advisory for Women and Gender Equality, from Florianópolis City Hall, DSQV participates in Maio Furta-Cor, a community campaign that attempts to raise awareness of the cause of maternal mental health through awareness-raising actions. throughout the month of May, when Mother’s Month is celebrated.

The initiative, carried out simultaneously throughout Brazil and in 17 other countries, has voluntary actions to encourage the construction of public health policies. The full lecture is available on the TJSC YouTube channel.
