Technician Flamengo, Tite defended the team’s stance in the 1-1 draw with Millonarios-COL, away from home, in the team’s debut in the Copa Libertadores. Even with an advantage on the scoreboard and an extra man on the field for much of the second half, Rubro-Negro saw Daniel Rivera, in the final minutes, equalize the score.

In the coach’s view, the team did not manage the result after the expulsion of Larry Vásquez, who brought down midfielder Arrascaeta inside the area. On the contrary, he activated his speed attackers to continue attacking the opponent and kill the confrontation.

However, the marking carried out by the Colombian team slowed the Red and Black momentum, which was unable to overcome the imposed blockade. With ten men, Millonarios implemented a low block marking, delaying their lines, to take advantage of the spaces and counterattack.

– We didn’t try to manage the game, we continued attacking the opponent. We put three speed attackers. We didn’t put the team behind. Millonarios, with ten, had a low score. He delayed the line to counterattack. We didn’t know how to overcome this blockade – said the coach at a press conference.

For Tite, Flamengo could have won if they had kept their players back, but that would deviate from the characteristics proposed by the commander, who believes that the equalizing goal “is part of the game, an individual play”.

Next Sunday (7), Rubro-Negro will face Nova Iguaçu, at 5pm (Brasília time), in the second leg of the Carioca Championship final. In the first match, played at Maracanã, Flamengo won 3-0 and got closer to the competition title.
