Who is Jorge Seif, nicknamed ’06’ by Bolsonaro and subject of impeachment proceedings for abuse of economic power in the elections

The trial that could result in the impeachment of senator Jorge Seif (PL-SC) for abuse of economic power will be resumed this Tuesday, 30th, by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Although he was acquitted by the Regional Electoral Court of Santa Catarina (TRE-SC), there was an appeal.

The 46-year-old parliamentarian was elected senator in 2022 with 1,484,110 votes. He is very close to former president Jair Bolsonaro, to the point of being nicknamed by Bolsonaro as “06”, in reference to the former president’s five biological children.

During the 2022 campaign, Bolsonaro was actively involved in the election campaign of the current senator, who held the position of Secretary of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the federal government during the former president’s term.

On March 8, 2023, Seif appointed Jair Renan Valle Bolsonaro, son of former president Bolsonaro, as Full Parliamentary Assistant in his Senate office. Renan was assigned to carry out his duties in Balneário Camboriú, located in the North of Santa Catarina.

Seif is originally from Rio de Janeiro, but has lived in Itajaí, in the north of Santa Catarina, since 1999. He is married to Catiane Seif, who currently holds the position of Assistant Secretary of State for Tourism in Santa Catarina.

In addition to being a parliamentarian, he is a businessman and has more than 40 years of experience as a rural producer, especially in the area of ​​fishing and fish logistics.

Judgment at the TSE

Seif faces accusations of having been favored by the support of businessmen Luciano Hang, from the Havan store chain, and Almir Manoel Atanázio dos Santos, president of the Footwear Industry Union of the city of São João Batista during the 2022 election.

In the action, the Bora Trabalho coalition (PSD, Patriota and União Brasil) alleges that the senator, his two alternates to the Senate, Hermes Artur Klann and Adrian Rogers Censi, Luciano Hang, and Almir Manoel Atanazio dos Santos, committed three electoral offenses that would constitute abuse of economic power in the 2022 elections. The illicit acts would have been committed to support and unduly favor Jorge Seif’s candidacy for the Senate. Everyone involved denies wrongdoing.
