Find out who the victims were who died after a minibus ran over worshipers in a procession in Greater Recife | Pernambuco

On Monday afternoon, relatives and residents participated in a mass in memory of the victims at the scene of the accident, celebrated by the archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Dom Paulo Jackson. A TV Globo spoke with relatives of some of them.

Edson Maurício Barbosa, 52 years old

Self-employed, Edson had four children. One of them, Everton Pereira Barbosa, told TV Globo that his father used to go to mass on Sundays and participated in all the events of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, which organized the Easter procession.

“He was always working for us, he didn’t miss anything at home. […]. Every Sunday he was there. When there were these celebrations, he tried hard, arrived tired, but he went. He really liked to exercise his faith”, said Everton.

Amauri João de Lima, 68 years old

Amauri’s son, tattoo artist Rafael Rodrigo de Lima was playing on the electric trio that accompanied the procession and saw when the minibus ran over the victims.

“When we were up there, they asked everyone to stay and the electric trio went down first to wait in case there was a brake problem and nothing like that happened. The electric trio came down and we stayed here. In the videos that are circulating on social media, you see it clearly. My wife is the one singing and shouting: ‘My God, my God'”, said Rafael Rodrigo.

According to Rodrigo, the vehicle took a while to stop after skidding on the road.

“He [o micro-ônibus] left, came along the side of the sidewalk, entered the road, catching everyone who was in the procession and came over [cada] person. And he only stopped because of the number of people who were under the bus”, reported the victim’s son.

According to the tattoo artist, Amauri was very religious. “My father was one of the people who most defended the Catholic faith, sometimes even blindly,” said Rafael Rodrigo.

Tereza Cristina Batista Silveira, 65 years old

In an interview with TV Globo, Tereza’s sister, Vera Lúcia Batista, said she was in the procession with her and her niece, who was also hit and is hospitalized at Hospital da Restauração. Vera said that she barely managed to escape.

“Everyone [estava] singing, praising the Lord. When I look back, the bus hit the pole and dragged the people in front. Then I jumped. When I jumped, about a minute, the car dragged by, that terror. Everyone screaming,” said Vera.
