International Court of Justice asks Israel to guarantee food distribution in Gaza

The ICJ is the main judicial body of the UN and is based in The Hague, in the Netherlands. The court stated that Israel must take all necessary and effective measures to ensure that basic services and humanitarian aid items are delivered to the residents of the Gaza Strip,

The war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas began on October 7 as a result of Hamas’ attack on Israeli territory. That day, terrorists killed around 1,160 people.

In response, Israel promised to annihilate Hamas and launched an offensive that has left 32,552 people dead in the Gaza Strip, according to data from Hamas itself.

In late December, South Africa filed a case with the ICJ arguing that the Israeli offensive violated the Convention for the Prevention of Genocide and that Israel was committing genocide.

South Africa called for new measures a few weeks later, with the aim of legally putting pressure on Israel not to launch a ground offensive against the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

The court rejected South Africa’s request regarding the Rafah offensive. The South Africans then filed an appeal in March, this time to ask for precautionary measures against “widespread hunger.”
