The 12-string guitar, Framus Hootenanny 5/024 12, manufactured in 1960, was acquired by John Lennon at the end of 1964 and used on albums the following year. At the end of 1965, the guitar was given as a gift to Gordon Waller, a Scottish artist with whom Lennon and Paul McCartney, 81, were friends. Later, Waller presented the guitar to his manager, who later stored it and forgot it in his attic.
According to Gear expert Andy Babiuk, the guitar is easily identifiable by distinct and unique marks on its wood. “When strummed, it immediately identifies as ‘that’ guitar,” the auction house describes. For sale, the piece was restored trying to maintain as much of its original as possible and was once again usable as an “instrument for making music”.
