Successor to “Christ Illusion”, “World Painted Blood” was recorded during a very difficult period for bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Anamaria, the Slayer frontman’s older sister, passed away in June 2009, after a long battle with cancer, which lasted more than a decade.

“At the beginning of the year, when we started recording the album, my sister had been fighting cancer for 14 years. When we started recording this album, she was recovering and I wasn’t very helpful. But I was always in the studio: I I didn’t want to be alone in the hotel room”, reported Araya, during an interview with Metal Hammer in 2009.

“I would spend most of the day with her, and then at night I would go to the studio and record what I needed to record, go back to the hotel, listen to what I had done, get up in the morning and go visit my sister again. Then I’d come back and, depending on what was going on and who was doing what, I’d go into the studio – and even if I wasn’t doing anything, I was there because Jeff, or Kerry [King, guitarrista] or Dave were doing something,” added the Chilean singer-songwriter.

As one might imagine, Anamaria’s illness took its toll on Tom, who was unable to write much material for “World Painted Blood.”

“I couldn’t concentrate. I just couldn’t put my mind to those thoughts. I was too busy… my mind wandered. I told the other guys, ‘This is what I wrote – if you can use it, great; if No, I understand’.”

Ultimately, Tom participated in the writing of four songs on “World Painted Blood”: the title track, “Beauty Through Order”, “Human Strain” and “Playing With Dolls”.
