Led Zeppelin + Sonic Youth? Check out John Paul Jones playing with Thurston Moore

-

Led Zeppelin (exponent of British 70’s toughness) and Sonic Youth (exponent of North American alternative rock) are two bands that have so little in common that they seem to belong to different universes. As published by Ultimate Classic Rock, last Sunday (24), a typical meeting of a crossroads of multiverses took place in Knoxville, Tennessee, with bassist John Paul Jones playing with guitarist and vocalist Thurston Moore.

The meeting took place at the Big Ears Festival where, exuding versatility, on Friday Jones performed a rock show playing Led Zeppelin classics (such as “Your Time Is Gonna Come,” “No Quarter,” “When the Levee Breaks,” “Since I’ ve Been Loving You” and “Going to California”); and on Saturday he played a trial show as a member of the avant-garde Sons of Chipotle. On Sunday, he took the stage for the final part of Moore’s show, closing the festival by playing bass on a selection of instrumentals.

That wasn’t the first time they played together, however. They had already shared the stage in 2019, at a charity event held by the London Musicians’ Collective at the 100 Club. Check out an excerpt of how it went below:

John Paul Jones is already used to playing with giants from the 90s/2000s: in addition to having formed Them Crooked Vultures in 2009 with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme, he has also played with the late Taylor Hawkins, among others.
