The mayor of São José (SC), Orvino Coelho (PSD), purchased 14 rifles for the Municipal Guard. In video published on your social networksthe politician, who defends former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), appears holding a rifle and says he is “no time to play with public safety”.

“Here we don’t give crime time to organize. In addition to 5 brand new vehicles, new 556 rifles arrived to protect the citizen […] No time to play with public security, because we’re going to put criminals in jail, because the work doesn’t stop here”, adds.

The mayor also said that “the rifles were bought to be used” is that, “if any agent is in danger or finds a law-abiding citizen in danger, they must use the firepower they have.”

According to law 10,826 of 2003, members of the Municipal Guard may carry firearms while carrying out their duties, in accordance with the respective municipal legislation. In São José, agents began using firearms in 2016, during the administration of the former mayor Adeliana Dal Pont (PL).

City hall indicates that 14 rifles were purchased for R$16,000 each. The weapons used in the video were manufactured by the company from Santa Catarina Taurus.

The rifle model is the AR-15, capable of hitting a target 300 meters away. The agents also received 8 rifles, 4 12-gauge shotguns, 2 grenade launchers and 160 pistols.

The politician will run for re-election against Dal Pont, also a Bolsonarist. In April, Bolsonaro vetoed the former mayor from his platform for criticizing his federal management during the Covid pandemic.
