The opposition bench demands the amount that will be spent to implement ‘Bahia pela Paz’, a program that replaces the ‘Pact for Life’ and promises to reduce violence rates in the state. Voting on the project has already been postponed on two occasions in the Legislative Assembly of Bahia (Alba). The last one took place this Tuesday (7), at the request of the minority.
During the plenary session, the opposition leader, Alan Sanches (União Brasil), questioned the lack of details regarding the program’s budget, and how State resources will be applied.
“How are we going to vote on a project in such an important area of public security with a blind budget? The State government needs to present a clear and objective plan to this House, and not just ask for authorization to make the budget changes that are necessary”, said Sanches.
The bill establishing ‘Bahia for Peace’, number 25.233/2024, was presented by the Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT) government on April 14 and has been on the House’s agenda in recent weeks. The PL vote has presented some embargoes. Last week, the session fell due to lack of quorum. It was necessary for 21 parliamentarians to be present in the House, which did not happen.
‘Bahia pela Paz’ has been the target of criticism not only from the opposition, but also from experts, who question the ‘gaps’ in the program. The professor at the Federal University of Bahia (Ufba), Luiz Cláudio Lourenço, who is a member of the Laboratory for Studies in Public Security, Citizenship and Society (LASSOS), is one of them.
“There are many gray areas regarding how ‘Bahia Pela Paz’ will incorporate organized civil society, how transparent the management will be, how much resources will be allocated to the project, which will be the priority areas and cities for the program”, he stated.
The government does not know what the investment will be to implement the project. In a note sent to CORREIO, the Secretariat of Justice and Human Rights (SJDH) informed that a survey is being carried out.
“The Bahia pela Paz program is of great complexity, involving structuring actions relating to public security, criminal execution, the integration of justice system bodies, in addition to community actions. The total investment is still being raised,” he said.
