The Pernambuco bench in the Senate voted in favor of recreating insurance to compensate traffic victims. PLP 233/2023 establishes the Mandatory Insurance for the Protection of Victims of Traffic Accidents – the former DPVAT, extinguished in 2020 by the Bolsonaro government.

Voting on the project took place this Wednesday afternoon. Teresa Leitão, Humberto Costa and Fernando Dueire were in favor of the project.

On social media, Teresa Leitão spoke about the importance of insurance. “Today we approved the return of SPVAT in the Senate. It is the recovery of the fund that guarantees assistance to accident victims. Insurance is an important social guarantee, especially because the victims are often cyclists, pedestrians, the elderly and children”.

The insurance guarantees compensation to victims of traffic accidents (or their heirs) in cases of death, permanent disability, in addition to covering medical care expenses for injuries.

The new insurance is broader than the old DPVAT in terms of medical coverage. It starts to finance medical and supplementary assistance, such as physiotherapy, medicines, orthopedic equipment, orthotics and prosthetics.

Funeral services and professional rehabilitation expenses for victims who become partially disabled will also be paid.

Another difference is the amount charged. The DPVAT costs the owner of a land vehicle (cars and motorcycles) annually between R$ 100 and 200. The SPVAT will cost between R$ 50 and 60 per year.
