The guidance in CTG shelters is for people to get information via the radio and check the news that reaches them. The profile “The world of CTG” informs about the collection points for donated material and shelters. There are more than 1,500 centers across the state — at least five per city — that are receiving people affected by the floods.

Humorist Badin Colono says that “alarmist” news is causing even more concern to the population devastated by the flood. Yesterday, he, who has 2.4 million followers, flew over places affected by floods with a helicopter, made a broadcast and encouraged the checking of information coming from dubious sources.

Colono says that many people doubted that the donations received through various means would actually reach those who needed help most. He organized a fundraiser and raised more than R$38 million as of yesterday — which should be donated to institutions affected by the floods. “Many cities are in need of trucks with water jets, cleaning materials, this information needs to circulate and we need to be accurate with the demands”, he says.

[Pelo rádio]information arrives in real time and is more accurate for those without battery or signal to communicate.

There was fake news reporting that trucks with donations would be prohibited from passing through, which is obviously a lie! We are encouraging people not to pass on fake news. It’s a difficult time, because some radio stations are without electricity.

Fake news

One of the fake news items identified by Paiva Malagnez was about the collapse of a dike in the city of Cachoeirinha, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The municipality’s dike is underneath the bridge that connects the two cities, separated by the Gravataí River.
