The ‘Emergencies’ campaign is mobilized to collect and distribute basic food baskets, hygiene and cleaning items, non-perishable food, water, non-refrigerated boxed juices, powdered milk, food for immediate consumption for local solidarity kitchens, blankets, mattresses and feed.

Other physical donation points have already been operating in the state of Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the tragedy, under the coordination of local Action committees.

“We started the campaign last week, as soon as the first news began to arrive through our local leaders. Since then, we have received financial donations equivalent to more than 1,600 tons, including food, water, hygiene and cleaning items , furniture, appliances”, explained Rodrigo “Kiko” Afonso, executive director of Ação da Cidadania.

Ação da Cidadania also accepts financial donations, through its official website and at pix:[email protected]. With part of the amount raised, the organization sent three tons of supplies to the population of Rio Grande do Sul by land this Monday (6). Kiko clarifies that Citizenship Action operates in the short, medium and long term.

“In this first moment we are taking food, hygiene and cleaning items. But we know that donations decrease a lot as the days go by. So this is when we need to help even more. In the medium and long term, Ação da Cidadania buys furniture , buy household appliances, buy items that help rebuild people’s lives – he added.

This Tuesday (7), the NGO took 10 tons of food and a thousand hygiene and cleaning kits to the Brazilian Air Force base at Galeão Airport, in the North Zone of Rio. FAB support is necessary as the International Airport Salgado Filho, in Porto Alegre, and some access highways to Rio Grande do Sul remain blocked.

Founded 31 years ago, Ação da Cidadania has maintained, since 2021, a specific channel for collecting and delivering donations to regions affected by catastrophes and natural disasters. The initiative has already provided support to municipalities in Maranhão, Tocantins, Pará, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Acre, Roraima, Alagoas and Pernambuco.

The number of deaths caused by the storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul rose to 90 confirmed and four under investigation this Tuesday, 7th. According to the new balance released by the Civil Defense, the number of injured also rose to 361, and at least 132 people missing.

The data also shows that more than 155 thousand are homeless and more than 48 thousand are in public shelters, in need of items such as mattresses, blankets and bed and bath linen. In total, at least 388 cities were affected and more than 1.3 million people suffered from the floods.
