MP-AL denounces mother and stepfather of beaten child who broke his femur

The stepfather of a 4-year-old boy who suffered fractures to his femur after being beaten inside his home in the city of Palmeira dos Índios, in the interior of Alagoas, was arrested after presenting himself to the police this Tuesday (7). He confessed that he drank alcohol, beat the child and tried to put the bone in place. He and the boy’s mother, who was already in prison, are accused of serious bodily injury, failure to provide assistance and ill-treatment.

The man presented himself at the police station in the city of Cacimbinha and said he does not remember the details of the day the boy was beaten. He will undergo a custody hearing and will be sent to the prison system.

“He said he drank a lot, used cocaine and threw the child on the bed. He said he tried to put the child’s bone in place and went to sleep. When he woke up he saw that the boy’s leg was very swollen and decided to run away when the police were at the house”, said the head of service at the Integrated Public Security Center (Cisp), in Palmeira dos Índios, Diogo Martins.

The Guardianship Council went to the family’s home on March 27, following a complaint and called the Military Police. The woman was arrested red-handed, and her companion fled.

“He handed himself in at the Cacimbinhas police station. We complied with the outstanding arrest warrant. Now, he will go to the prison system and be available to the courts,” said the head of service.

After being rescued, the boy was admitted to the Agreste Emergency Hospital, in Arapiraca. In addition to the broken thigh bone, he also fractured ribs.

According to the Guardianship Council, the child’s father and paternal grandmother live in São Paulo. The paternal grandfather lives in Penedo, and is accompanying his grandson in the hospital.

When he is discharged from hospital, the boy must be sent to the Casa da Esperança shelter, while his grandfather’s family will be accompanied to confirm that they can maintain custody of the child.
