The dams at risk of imminent failure are in Cotiporã, Bento Gonçalves, Canela and São Martinho da Serra. Another nine dams are in alert or attention status (see below).

The 14 de Julho dam, located between the municipalities of Cotiporã and Bento Gonçalves, partially ruptured on the afternoon of this Thursday (2). The Arroio Barracão dam, in Bento Gonçalves, suffered erosion on the right bank, and at Saturnino de Brito, in São Martinho da Serra, there was a need to evacuate the population.

The emergency decree requires that measures be taken to preserve lives. The alert level has anomalies that pose a risk to the safety of the dam, requiring measures to maintain safety conditions. Attention level structures are when anomalies do not compromise the safety of the dam in the short term, but require monitoring, control or repair over time.

Rains in RS

In total, 39 people died due to the storms in the neighboring state. Another 68 people are missing. This Friday afternoon (3), Governor Eduardo Leite said that the level of the Taquari River, one of the most affected, is falling.

— It is the worst disaster ever recorded in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. Perhaps one of the biggest disasters the country has recorded in recent history — he said, at a press conference.

In Porto Alegre, in Guaíba, the water level exceeded 4.5 meters and advanced on streets and avenues, causing flooding in sections of the waterfront, in the South Zone, as well as Mauá and Conceição avenues, on the access to the Capital. A security gate broke early this Friday afternoon, causing flooding in the North Zone of the city.
