Family of man shot after fight in bar in Bahia suspected of homophobia

A 34-year-old man was shot more than 18 times after a fight in a bar in the city of Lauro de Freitas, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. This Friday (26), Tiago Araújo dos Santos, 34 years old, is hospitalized in serious condition, at the State General Hospital (HGE), in the capital of Bahia. Four of the 18 shots hit him in the head.

The case happened on Saturday (20), at the establishment located in a condominium in the Itinga neighborhood.

Preliminary information indicates that Tiago Araújo had an argument, in the condominium’s bar, with the suspect who fired the shots. The man then went to the house where he lives, picked up a babysitter, returned to the scene and shot the victim several times.

“This man was actually responsible for the shooting. We don’t know who the person is, we just know that the reason was due to an argument. Nothing justifies a person shooting 18 shots at a person. Tiago is alive because God has a purpose in his life. He’s going to get out of this,” said a member of the victim’s family who preferred to remain anonymous.

The family member also said that Tiago does not know the suspect and reinforced the hope that the victim will recover without consequences from the attack.

“He didn’t know this man. He was at the wrong time and in the wrong place. The certainty we have is that God’s justice is right. Our main focus is the complete restoration of Tiago. He will come out alive,” he said.

The Civil Police reported that the case is being investigated at the Itinga police station. According to an investigation by TV Bahia production, the discussion may have been motivated by homophobia. However, the police have not yet confirmed this version.

On Wednesday (25), doctors removed almost 50% of the sedation, but Tiago Araújo’s health condition is considered delicate. He will undergo tests such as a CT scan to find out if there were brain injuries.

According to information provided by Tiago’s family, the respiratory system and the infection improved, in addition to the removal of the chest tube.
