The state of Minas Gerais presented an Environmental Impact Study (EIA) to build a R$5.07 billion (US$988 million) ring road around the state capital, Belo Horizonte.

The state government signed a 30-year contract last year with Italian company INC for the construction, operation and maintenance of the ring road. INC won the bid for the project – known as the largest PPP (Public-Private Partnership) initiative in Minas Gerais – involving R$3 billion in public resources, in an auction held in August 2022.

The EIA was produced by the State Secretariat for Infrastructure, Mobility and Partnerships (Seinfra) and presented to the State Environmental Foundation (Feam), which will assess the environmental viability of the project.

“We want the Rodoanel to be a reference, not only for urban mobility in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, but also a reference in the environmental licensing process”, stated Pedro Bruno, state secretary of Infrastructure, Mobility and Partnerships, in a published note .

The government’s expectation is that the project will obtain installation and operating licenses within a year and begin construction in 2025, which was originally scheduled to begin in 2024.

The Rodoanel will be approximately 70 kilometers long and will cross 8 municipalities: Sabará, Santa Luzia, Vespasiano, São José da Lapa, Pedro Leopoldo, Ribeirão das Neves, Contagem and Betim.
