Henrique Queiroz Filho pays homage to the Heroines of Tejucupapo with an inscription in the Pantheon of Pernambuco

Project recognizes the bravery of women from Pernambuco who marked the history of Brazil during Dutch domination

On the 278th anniversary of the legendary Battle of Tejucupapo, a milestone in Brazilian resistance against Dutch domination, light is shed on the true heroines who led the defense: the Women of Tejucupapo. In a historic act, the Legislative Assembly of the State of Pernambuco (Alepe) unanimously approved Project Resolution No. 1842/2024, inscribing their names in the prestigious Book of the Pantheon of Heroes and Heroines of Pernambuco – Fernando Santa Cruz.

The project, proposed by state deputy Henrique Queiroz Filho (PP), is more than a fair tribute: it is a tribute to the courage and determination of the women who, led by Maria Camarão, Maria Quitéria, Maria Clara and Joaquina, bravely faced the invaders with sticks, pans and boiling water, guaranteeing victory for their people and their country.

“The memory of Tejucupapo strengthens the meaning of women’s collective struggle for survival, against setbacks and for more rights. Pride of Pernambuco and fundamental in the history of Brazil, the appreciation of this episode helps to rescue women’s place in history, in the struggle for freedom and the transformation of society”, highlights Henrique.

These heroines, whose legacy echoes through the centuries, now receive the official recognition they deserve. Their actions not only defended their homes, but also inspired future generations to fight for justice and equality.

“May the Women of Tejucupapo remain a beacon of hope and inspiration for all of us, reminding us that, with determination and solidarity, we can overcome any challenge”, adds the author of the project.
