A Giant Indian rooster called ‘Jorge’ is being investigated by the Civil Police of Mato Grosso do Sul after pecking an 80-year-old tourist in Campo Grande (MS). The woman targeted by the bird’s attack filed a police report for failing to exercise caution against the animal’s owner, who runs the risk of losing custody of the rooster if the animal is being mistreated.

Antônia Coronel, 68 years old, is ‘Jorge’s’ tutor. The woman has the habit of walking her pet rooster daily, keeping the animal on an improvised rope as a leash. However, last Monday (22), the rooster ended up attacking a tourist from Maceió, Alagoas, who had been staying for about a week in a house on Dona Antônia’s street. The information comes from TV Morena, a TV Globo affiliate in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The guardian states that ‘Jorge’ never attacked anyone, but that the woman got too close to the rooster: ‘She was the one who messed with him’. The tourist, who was reportedly ‘disturbed’ by the situation, went to the police and registered a case of failure to exercise caution against the rooster’s owner. Since then, Antônia stopped taking ‘Jorge’ for a walk in the square and the animal, which is one of the pets that keep the elderly woman company, is only taken to scratch in empty areas of the neighborhood.

After recording the incident, the Military Environmental Police (PMA) decided to investigate the case. The agency must visit Dona Antônia’s house in the next few days and, if the animal is experiencing abuse, it may be seized.

Lieutenant Eveny, from the Environmental Military Police, explained that the law does not allow the breeding of roosters in urban areas, but the animal can remain with its owner if it is raised as a pet: ‘We need to know if they have veterinary care, if are vaccinated. We have to go to the location and see if we really find these animals, so we can say whether they will be seized or not’.
