Former president received guests at his home for a birthday party in Brasília and proved to be one of the few unanimous people in the capital

“He is one of the few unanimous people in Brasília”. It was with this phrase that those invited to the 94th birthday party of the former president of the Republic and former senator José Sarney (MDB) greeted the politician. He celebrated his birthday on Wednesday (April 24, 2024) in Lago Sul, an upscale neighborhood in Brasília. The event brought together the government and the political opposition, covering all spheres of the Three Powers.

Representatives from the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) attended the event in force. Ministers Geraldo Alckmin (Industry and Commerce), José Múcio (Defense), Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations), Juscelino Filho (Communications) and Jader Filho (Cities).

The party started at 7:30 pm. Before the scheduled time, however, a line of cars and suits and ties formed outside his house. The invitation stated that the former president’s children and grandchildren were the authors of the invitation. In fact, between a suit and a formal dress, a child running and tripping on the stairs and a high-ranking politician were confused.

Lula’s absence was not a problem. Senator and Government leader Jaques Wagner (PT-BA) checked with Sarney to see if the two had spoken. Yes. Lula called Sarney in the afternoon. “There is a relationship of mutual affection and great gratitude from Lula to the former president”the congressman told Power360.

The party took place in 2 different environments. In the 1st, the cake and various sweets, from traditional quindim to chocolate pyramids, in addition to the cake, which decorated the entrance room. At the back of the house, waiters served wines – the red was Argentinean Angelica Zapata and the white was Ruttini – and 12-year-old whiskey.

Initially, it was supposed to be a more restricted meeting. At the same time, the session was scheduled to vote on Lula’s vetoes in Congress. With the postponement, deputies and senators went to the meeting.

The reasons that led the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), to postpone the session was one of the main topics of the conversations. Deputies did not spare words to criticize Pacheco. Senators said they were ready to vote, but that they had no problem delaying it for two weeks.

Even in opposition, federal deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG) participated in the party. Sarney became president after the congressman’s grandfather, Tancredo Neves, died having already been elected president. Sarney was his deputy.

Another topic present in the conversations was the succession of Arthur Lira (PP-AL), also present, as president of the Chamber. Three of the main competitors were there: Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP), Antonio Brito (PSD-BA) and Isnaldo Bulhões (MDB-AL).

Former enemies

The minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) Flávio Dino went to the party. Born in Maranhão, like the former president, they were political enemies in the past.

Dino was governor of Maranhão for 2 terms: from 2015 to 2022. When he ran for reelection in 2018, he beat Sarney’s daughter, Roseana Sarney, in the state election.

The relationship was troubled for many years. But that was behind us. Dino was one of the most popular guests at the party. He posed for photos and greeted several guests. He went to Sarney and they talked. Alongside the 2, Sarney’s daughter, Roseana.

In a personal conversation with the former president, he said: “I wish you all the best“. And he joked about the number of guests, saying there would be more than 20,000 people by the time he turns 100, which could happen in 2030.
