Despite the food security index having increased by 24% in the last 6 years in Mato Grosso do Sul, 27 thousand households had to cut the amount of food on their plates, even for their children, in order to survive. According to the EBIA (Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale), the scenario constitutes serious insecurity.

The survey was released by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), this Thursday morning (25). The study was carried out by PNAD (National Household Sample Survey), in the fourth quarter of 2023.

In addition to the serious index, the survey also shows that 157 thousand (15.1%) households experience mild food insecurity, that is, when the family needs to change the quality of the food offered, however, without sacrificing quantity.

In moderate food insecurity, there is a need to restrict the amount of food in some way, be it proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables or fruits. In 2023, 42 thousand (4.1%) families resorted to partial cuts to be able to feed themselves.

Food insecurity between years – The increase in security, that is, access to food, caused the insecurity rate to decrease, however, it still remains significant. According to EBIA, the severe category registered 4.5% of households in the situation, between the years 2017-2018. In 2023, it was 2.6%, a reduction of 42%.

In the moderate category, the situation, in 2023, was observed in 4.1% (42 thousand) households in Mato Grosso do Sul. The number is 38.8% lower than that recorded in 2017-2018, when the State reached 6 .7%. In the light category, the drop was 41%. In 2023, there were 157 thousand (15.1%), compared to 25.8% in 2017-2018.

Increase – Food security is the availability of food in adequate frequency and quantity. In the State, in 2023, 813 thousand (78.2%) households were within adequate conditions. If compared to the last survey, carried out by POF (Family Budget Survey), from 2017-2018, there was a growth of 24.1%. The 2023 proportion places the State in 7th place among the federative units with the most food security. In first place is Santa Catarina (88.8%), followed by Paraná with 82.1%.

In addition to the data obtained in the 2023 PNAD, IBGE has been collecting information on food security for 20 years, through questions from the National Household Sample Survey.
