The State Department of Traffic of Goiás (Detran-GO) launched, this Monday (05/06), the Yellow May 2024 campaign, a global movement to raise awareness about life in traffic. This year, the central theme is “Peace in traffic begins with you”.
Throughout the month of May, public bodies, the private sector and civil society will join forces to debate the need to reduce accident rates around the world. In Goiás, blitzes, lectures and educational actions will be carried out in several municipalities.
“Alcohol, speeding, not wearing seat belts are our biggest enemies in traffic. We need to rethink our actions and promote peace in traffic”, argues the president of Detran-GO, Delegate Waldir.
Yellow May Actions
Detran-GO’s programming begins a circuit of educational actions in ten parks spread across all regions of Goiânia. During the weekends, cyclists and pedestrians will be approached in the parks for fun and interactive lessons on road safety. Activities, for all ages, include lectures, workshops, games and distribution of information material.
The Yellow Maio actions also include a lecture aimed at motorcyclists who are delivery drivers, on May 29th, to debate the challenges of the category and solutions for traffic safety.
In partnership with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the seminar “Dialogues for Life in Traffic” will be held on May 23, with the participation of the OAB Traffic Law Commission. It will be a space to discuss the legal aspects of traffic safety and propose actions to improve legislation.
Detran-GO’s actions will also reach several municipalities surrounding the Federal District. Awareness activities will be taken to cities with the aim of promoting safer traffic. Surrounding transport companies will also welcome the municipality’s teams for educational lectures with the support of Sest-Senat.
Advertising campaign
During Yellow May, Detran-GO launched an awareness campaign entitled “Don’t turn traffic into a war”, aligning itself with the national theme of the Yellow May 2024 Movement: “Peace in traffic starts with you”.
The initiative aims to highlight the seriousness and consequences of traffic accidents through alarming data: more than 139 thousand people in Goiás have suffered consequences resulting from accidents in the last three years.
The campaign uses images with a strong visual impact to illustrate how reckless driver behavior contributes to a hostile traffic environment. For example, using a cell phone while driving is compared to the effect of a grenade, which can explode at any moment, causing fatalities. Likewise, driving under the influence of alcohol turns the vehicle into a battle tank, increasing the risk of serious accidents and impacting innocent lives.
Furthermore, the initiative includes moving testimonies from victims who have suffered amputations, sharing the challenges of their new post-accident routines. The campaign is complemented by a series of educational materials, available to people of all ages, and specific actions in schools, reinforcing the message of responsibility and care in traffic.
