Traffic accidents in Paraná, analyzed in the period 2022 and 2023, meant, in addition to the social impact, an expense for public health. According to data from the State Department of Health, the investment that the Unified Health System (SUS) disbursed to treat the victims reached R$36 million — an amount equivalent to the financing of three new Specialty Medical Outpatient Clinics (AMEs).

Younger people are the main ones involved in these accidents. In the last two years, 6 thousand young people aged 20 to 29 were hospitalized for traffic injuries in public hospitals in Paraná. 1,100 died. The resources applied to this age group cost more than R$10.2 million. There are no financial reports for 2023 and 2024 yet.

In general, considering the population from newborns to elderly people over 60 years old, according to data from the Hospital Information System (SIH), in 2022 the state recorded 10.5 thousand hospitalizations. In 2023, 10,591.

Profile of victims of traffic accidents in Paraná

The report explains that men suffer more traffic accidents than women in the state. In 2023, 7,900 men would have accidents and 2,500 women.

As mentioned, the age group between 20 and 29 years old dominates the list of those involved in accidents in Paraná. In addition, adults between 30 and 49 years old also have significant results (3.9 thousand between 30 and 39 and 3.2 thousand between 40 and 49 years old).

Regarding deaths, the report explains that, in 2022 alone, the following died in Paraná: 485 pedestrians, 148 cyclists, 785 motorcyclists, 947 occupants of cars and trucks and 113 drivers or passengers of heavy vehicles.

Between 2010 and 2023, more than 60 thousand people died in Paraná in accidents involving motorcycles. The record year was 2023, with 5,900 deaths.

Government seeks awareness

The health secretary, Beto Preto, argues that these data help to evaluate the scenario of the impact of traffic accidents on the Unified Health System — which accounts for healthcare costs, overload of services, premature mortality. Furthermore, he shows concern about the quality of life of accident victims, especially those who suffer consequences such as disabilities.

“The data on hospitalizations in the SUS for traffic injuries are very worrying, but they are not yet an end point, because accidents result in countless other problems. Unfortunately, young people are the main victims. Surveillance and education must be permanent”, said the secretary.

On the topic, the CEO of Detran-PR, Adriano Furtado, explains that the agency is focused on raising awareness among drivers, especially motorcyclists, about the impacts of traffic accidents on society as a whole.
