Brazil, the United States and 15 other countries released a joint note, this Tuesday (23), calling for the immediate release of all hostages held for more than 200 days by Hamas in the Gaza strip.

The call for the release of the hostages highlights that among those kidnapped by Hamas are nationals of the countries and that the fate of the population of Gaza and those imprisoned are a cause for international concern.

“We emphasize that the agreement on the table for the release of the hostages would allow for an immediate and prolonged ceasefire in Gaza, which would facilitate the delivery of necessary additional humanitarian assistance to the entire Gaza Strip and lead to a credible end to hostilities. The inhabitants of Gaza could return to their homes and lands, with prior preparations to guarantee shelter and humanitarian supplies”, says the text.

The note is signed in addition to Brazil and the United States, by Argentina, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Spain, France, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the United Kingdom, Serbia, and Thailand. Every country has citizens among those kidnapped by Hamas.

“We will reiterate our call on Hamas to release the hostages and let us put an end to this crisis so that, collectively, we can focus our efforts on bringing peace and stability to the region,” the text concludes.

At the end of a coffee with journalists, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva revealed that he had signed the text, negotiated with the United States and other countries.

Around 240 people were kidnapped by Hamas in Israel on October 7 last year, beginning a violent Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip, in the hunt for Hamas militants. Some of those kidnapped were released during a brief ceasefire in November.

Michel Nisenbaum, 59 years old, kidnapped by Hamas, is Brazilian, but has lived in Israel since he was a teenager. Three other Brazilians were killed by the group on the day of the attack.
