Free music production course for women is open for registration in SC

The second edition of “Produza como uma Mulher”, an entirely free online course aimed at musicians living in Santa Catarina, is open for registration. The initiative is aimed at women who compose original music, and who are at the beginning of their careers or have independent careers, and aims to increase the autonomy of musicians by promoting basic knowledge so that they can produce their music themselves. Registration can be made on this website, and is open until May 7th.

“Produce like a woman – autonomy in musical production for musicians” is a cultural proposal carried out with resources from the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, by the Catarinense Culture Foundation (FCC), through the Elisabete Anderle Prize for Stimulating Culture.

In this edition, there are 30 vacancies available – 12 of them will be aimed at trans women, indigenous women, racialized women, single mothers and non-binary people. The first meeting is scheduled to take place on May 21st. To participate, you must reside in Santa Catarina, be over 18 years of age and have original musical productions, whether released or not.

According to the artist Chovvve, who is the creator and coordinator of the project, the proposal is to contribute to transforming the reality of the music market in Brazil, which is mostly dominated and produced by men. According to data from the Brazilian Union of Composers (UBC), for example, only 15% of the organization’s members are women. In a section that takes into account exclusively the southern region of the country, the number is even lower – just 9%.

“The idealization of ‘Produce like a woman’ comes from the observation of this and other gaps, such as the still slow progression of the presence of women in festival line-ups and the hegemonic male presence in the technical area of ​​music production. By creating a production course for women in Santa Catarina, our team intends to contribute to the decentralization of Brazilian musical production (concentrated more than 70% in the southeast region), and encourage the growth of the presence of women in the music scene”, highlights Chovvvewho is also a musician, cultural producer and illustrator, and lives in Laguna, in the south of Santa Catarina.

In total, the second edition of “Produza como uma Mulher” will feature 10 meetings online. In them, musicians will have access to basic technical knowledge for independent music production, including notions of production software and plugins, technical production vocabulary and music release techniques. In the first edition of the project, held in 2022, 20 women musicians were included.

“Our idea is for participants to learn about all the steps involved in producing a song, from recording, through the composition of virtual instruments, mixing, mastering and release. One of the main objectives is to enable musicians to have autonomy in the production of their music, which includes having enough knowledge to communicate with other professionals involved in this process”, adds Chovvve.
