With the accumulated volume of 80 millimeters of water in the last 72 hours and the possibility of heavy rain for Salvador, the city’s Civil Defense (Codesal) began operating at an “attention” level this Wednesday (3).

This means that technicians — engineers, architects and geologists — will go to the field to carry out inspections of the Civil Defense Preventive Plan, the PPDC, as explained by the agency’s sub-coordinator, Alana Matos, to g1.

The objective is to “identify features of slope instability, analyze imminent risk and define homes for evacuation/community protection in the regions covered by a warning and alarm system — sirens”.

According to Alana, in this scenario, inspections are also carried out in areas mapped by Codesal, with a high risk of landslides. Thus, even without the activation of sirens, people in vulnerable situations have the possibility of moving away from the risk zone as soon as possible.

“The advice for the population is that at the slightest sign of risk, look for a safe place and dial 199. The duty during Operation Rain is intensified and focuses on meeting emergency demands at any time of the day, including weekends and holidays” , highlights Alana.

  • Level 2 – Attention: preventive action on site
  • Level 3 – Alert

Forecast for the next few days in Salvador

For Thursday (4) and Friday (5), the forecast is for cloudy to partially cloudy skies, with an 80% chance of light to moderate rain, at any time of the day. There is a risk of flooding and landslides on both days.

Over the weekend, the forecast is similar. The sky should be cloudy with a chance of up to 90% of moderate rain. Again, the risk of flooding and landslides is considered and the possibility of heavy rain caused by a remnant of the cold front cannot be ruled out.
