Residents of the interior of Rio Grande do Norte are anxiously awaiting the increase in the volume of the Marechal Dutra dam, known as Gargalheiras, located in the city of Acari. The reservoir reached 97.33% of its total capacity this Wednesday morning (3), according to the RN Water Management Institute (Igarn), and is very close to generating the long-awaited “bleeding”.

This is the term used for the overflow of the dam, which has not happened since May 2011. The phenomenon happens when the capacity exceeds 100% and the water gushes out, forming a large waterfall.

Some residents have held a “vigil” at the site, waiting for the blood to be drained, in the place that served as the setting for the Brazilian film “Bacurau”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, released in 2019. At the time, the dam was dry.

Gargalheiras has been considered a historical heritage site in Rio Grande do Norte since 2021.
