Moraes against “evil brainwashing” on social networks

The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraessigned this Wednesday, 3rd, technical cooperation agreements between the Integrated Center for Combating Disinformation and Defense of Democracy (Ciedde) — a body linked to the TSE —, to Federal Police (PF) and the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) to combat misinformation and fake news during the 2024 municipal elections.

According to Moraes, it is the role of the Electoral Court to ensure that voters vote freely, without being exposed to the “evil of the 21st century, which is misinformation”.

“Voters cannot be deceived, induced by fake news. It is the duty of the Electoral Court to guarantee voters freedom when making choices, that they have access to all possible information, all true information. What is not possible is for social networks to be captured, instrumentalized, to brainwash voters with evil.”stated the president of the TSE.

AGU, the “legal arm” from Ciedde

The AGU, commanded by minister Jorge Messias, will be the “legal arm” of Ciedde against platforms that do not comply with content removal orders.

“The Attorney General of the Union will be ours, I joked with the minister [Jorge] Messias, our legal arm of Ciedde to enforce the resolutions and determinations of the Superior Electoral Court when there is no immediate compliance”said Moraes.

The agreement signed by the TSE should allow the PF and AGU to streamline contact between bodies, entities and social media platforms and accelerate the implementation of preventive and corrective actions related to posts that contain hate speech.

“Corruption of the electoral process”

Jorge Messiasin turn, said that disinformation is a “form of corruption of the electoral process” and defended the use of State structures, such as Ciedde, to combat the dissemination of fake news.

“Disinformation, or what I have called informational disorder, is a form of corruption of the electoral process, it is a form of corruption of the democratic process, because it takes away from voters the necessary conditions to freely exercise their right to vote, which It is a sacred right provided for in our Constitution. And this is not disinterested and it is also not naive.”he stated.
