This Thursday (4), the State Secretariat for Resocialization and Social Inclusion (Seris) will deliver a library within the Alagoas prison system, at the Alagoas Maximum Security Penitentiary (PenSM). The equipment will honor the writer, journalist, researcher and activist from Alagoas Heliônia Ceres, a name suggested by the Academia Alagoana de Letras (AAL).

The inauguration and delivery of this space will house around 5 thousand books, many of them donated thanks to campaigns carried out by the Secretariat for Resocialization and Social Inclusion (Seris) and partners, such as the Judiciary of Alagoas and AAL

This is an initiative by the Government of Alagoas that is valuing reading in prisons to encourage knowledge and social reintegration.

“The inauguration of the new Escritora Heliônia Ceres de Melo library is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it provides inmates with access to education, culture and entertainment, which can help with their reintegration into society during and after serving their sentence”, says the head of the Alagoas Maximum Security Penitentiary, criminal police officer Glauber Melo.

In the criminal police officer’s view, reading can also be a form of escapism and a way of dealing with the stress and loneliness of the prison environment. “The library can also contribute to personal development, improve reading and writing skills and promote reflection and self-knowledge. In short, the inauguration of this library not only expands learning opportunities, but can also have a positive impact on the resocialization of inmates segregated there”, adds Melo.

“The choice of the honoree Heliônia Ceres, who gives her name to the library at the Maximum Security Penitentiary, occurred based on the recognition of the Alagoas native, professor, journalist, researcher and activist for the feminist cause. Sharing the writer’s works with PenSM students, in addition to cultural enrichment and stimulating critical perception, allows the reader to get closer to the themes discussed, considering she is a woman from Alagoas who contributes so much to national literature”, highlights the criminal police officer Clarice Damasceno, Education and Citizenship manager at Seris.
