In an unusual move, a federal university revokes “doctor honoris causa” titles from 3 former military presidents

-

The Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) reported, on Monday (1st), that it had revoked the “honoris causa” doctoral titles of former presidents of the military period Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco, Artur da Costa e Silva and Ernesto Geisel.

On July 31, 1964, the title was granted to Castelo Branco; on September 18, 1968, Costa e Silva; and on January 13, 1976 (with delivery taking place on January 16, 1981), to Ernesto Geisel.

The decision was taken by the University Council, the highest body of the university.

The measure taken by the UFPR took place one day after the date on which the 60th anniversary of the revolution of March 31, 1964 was celebrated. In the country, there were few demonstrations due to the day, especially because Lula prohibited his government from mentioning the date.
