The State of Santa Catarina should harvest 30% more pine nuts in 2024, with 5.7 thousand tons, according to a survey carried out by the Regional Management of the Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company (Epagri) in Lages with producers from Santa Catarina. Seed harvesting began on April 1st and continues until July.

Despite the growth, the researchers’ assessment is that the volume is not significant given that production last year was “very low”.

The suspicion is that the climate of the last three years has interfered with the productivity of the araucaria, the tree that gives rise to food, as the pine nut takes 32 months to reach full maturity.

According to Epagri, at least 30% of rural producers in the Serra Catarinense region rely on pine nuts as a source of income on the property.

“We hope that the price pays off for farmers, who at the beginning of the harvest are receiving around R$6 per kilo”, highlights the regional manager of Epagri in Lages, José Márcio Lehmann, in a note.
