A large quantity of fish accumulated in an area of ​​the Gangorra dam, in Rafael Fernandes, in the west of Rio Grande do Norte, caught the attention of residents of the municipality, who recorded the scene. The case happened after heavy rains recorded in the region this week.

According to Telton Ramos, coordinator of the Instituto Peixes da Caatinga and researcher at UFPB, the fish were probably trapped in shallow areas after the rains stopped. According to him, many rivers fall quickly after a large flow of water.

“It rained a lot, there was a lot of water, but the water drops quickly, when it stops raining, and they all accumulate in a certain place”, he says.

According to Telton, the species of fish shown in the video is popularly known as curimatã, which is in the reproduction period.

“During this period, the river waters become muddy and many species move up the rivers in a process known as piracema. These fish move up the rivers to reproduce in the highest portions of the rivers. That is precisely what happens in this video,” said the researcher.

Although the closed season ended at the end of February, the expert argues that it is important to avoid fishing for the species during the reproduction period.

“Fishing this fish during this period is harmful to fishing and the diversity of fish in the basin. The females are ovate and are going up the rivers to reproduce, and this is how they will guarantee the next generation of fish in this basin. The ideal is to catch these fish and place it above the dam. In theory, people could catch this fish, but ideally it shouldn’t happen at this time”, he considered.
