The city of Feira de Santana recorded the fourth case of rabies in bats this year. The information was confirmed by Bahia Notícias in conjunction with the city’s Municipal Health Department, this Tuesday (2).
According to the ministry, the animal was found on Avenida Sampaio, in the center of the city, this Monday (1st). The agency reported that the vaccine against the disease is available for healthy animals from three months of age.
SMS also recommended that owners transport pets safely – cats in appropriate crates, while dogs should be on collars or chains, to avoid further contamination by the disease.
If a dead bat is found, the population should contact the city’s Municipal Center for Zoonosis Control at (75) 9 9851-8583 so that the animal can be collected and subjected to tests to check whether it was infected with the rabies virus.
Cases of aggression towards humans involving dogs and cats must be referred to the anti-rabies sector, based at the Dr. Leone Coelho Lêda Specialized Health Center (CSE), for monitoring.
