The judiciary will judge, on the 10th, Wednesday, the end of Rede Globo’s contract with TV Gazeta de Alagoas. The partnership between the two vehicles has existed since 1975, but Globo does not intend to renew the concession contract, which led the two broadcasters to fight a legal battle.
To ask for the end of the renewal of the concession contract, Globo cited Fernando Collor de Mello’s involvement in passive corruption and money laundering schemes. Collor and the director of the Arnon de Mello Organization at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) would have even used TV Gazeta to receive bribes.
To stop the end of the contract, Gazeta cited that it has been in judicial recovery since 2019, due to debts accumulated over the years and that Globo’s transmission concession would be essential to keep Gazeta afloat. Without Globo’s money, there would be mass layoffs and the extinction of at least 209 of the 279 jobs at Fernando Collor’s company.
But recently, prosecutor Marco Méro, from the Public Ministry of Alagoas (MPAL), issued a favorable opinion to TV Globo against TV Gazeta de Alagoas, agreeing to the end of the contract between the TV stations, since “the convention contract commercial property does not qualify as a capital asset and, therefore, cannot be declared as essential by the judicial recovery court”.
Officially, Gazeta’s contract with Globo ended in December 2023, including TV Asa Branca, from Pernambuco, already maintains an office in Alagoas, to be Gazeta’s replacement in the concession contract with Globo.
The case will now be judged on the 10th, but it must be extended to higher courts through appeals, so this situation between the two broadcasters is still far from coming to an end.
