Pernambuco is approaching 2,500 confirmed cases of dengue; State has low demand for the vaccine

The Epidemiological Bulletin released this Tuesday (30) by the State Department of Health (SES) shows that Pernambuco already has 2,447 confirmed cases of dengue and 24,080 probable cases of the disease in 2024 alone.

The number of people infected in the first four months of 2024 is 601.2% higher than in the same period of the previous year. Of the almost 2,500 confirmed cases, 44 are serious and two people have already died from the disease this year, one in Tuparetama and the other in Moreilândia, both municipalities in Sertão.

The public most affected by the disease are men and women aged between 20 and 29 years old. Municipalities such as Recife, São José da Coroa Grande and Petrolina have a high incidence of cases. Furthermore, the state capital, Olinda, Paulista, Petrolina and other municipalities have already recorded serious cases of the disease.

The Epidemiological Bulletin also counted 391 confirmed cases and 3,646 probable cases of chikungunya in 2024, with no deaths to date. Furthermore, there are 431 probable cases of Zika virus in Pernambuco this year, but no confirmation.

Pernambuco expands age range for dengue vaccination

Despite the growth in dengue cases in the State, there is low demand among the population for the vaccine that prevents the disease. Therefore, the 20 municipalities in Pernambuco authorized by the Ministry of Health to vaccinate against dengue can expand the age range for access to the vaccine starting this Tuesday (26).

With this, children and adolescents aged between 10 and 14 years old can be immunized. Previously, the guidance was to vaccinate boys and girls aged 10 and 11.

Locations benefited: Recife, Paulista, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Vitória de Santo Antão, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Igarassu, Camaragibe, Abreu e Lima, Olinda, Chã Grande, Araçoiaba, São Lourenço da Mata, Chã de Alegria, Moreno, Ilha de Itamaracá , Ipojuca, Glória do Goitá, Fernando de Noronha, Pombos and Itapissuma.
