Pernambuco registered the second highest murder rate per 100 thousand inhabitants across the country, according to data from the Violence Monitor. Given the alarming rates involving public security, the Legislative Assembly of Pernambuco (Alepe) will hold a public hearing to debate the crisis in public security in the state next Wednesday (3) in the Sérgio Guerra auditorium at 9am.

According to Deputy Delegate Gleide Ângelo, full member of the Public Security and Social Defense Commission of Alepe, the meeting aims to debate the issue in order to find effective measures to reduce cases of violence in Pernambuco.

“Crime is unchecked in Pernambuco. Banditry killed a nine-month-old baby in Itamaracá. Banditry killed a 10-year-old child and left another who, at just seven years old, is at risk of becoming a paraplegic. Banditry shot another three-year-old child. This is what crime is doing in our State and, if you don’t have an investigation, how are you going to arrest?”, declared the state deputy.

The hearing will also discuss the lack of planning and effectiveness of the Together for Security program. According to Gleide, since its launch, the Program has not yet shown convincing results in reducing crime. Juntos Pela Segurança’s goal is to reduce Intentional Violent Deaths (MVIs) by 30% by 2026.

Representatives from the Social Defense, Administration and Resocialization secretariats, as well as organizations such as Sinpol, ADEPPE, as well as ASPPAPE, were invited to the public hearing.

Members of the Union of Civil Police Clerks of Pernambuco, ACS and the Scientific Police Association of the State of Pernambuco were also summoned. Organized civil society, through the Brazilian Public Security Forum and Instituto Sou da Paz, will also be present.

Violence challenges Together for Security
