The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, extended the employment of the National Public Security Force in Rio de Janeiro, through an ordinance published last Thursday (28/3). According to the document, the measure is valid for 30 days, starting this Monday (1/4).
According to the ordinance, the National Force acts in support of Federal and State public security bodies, to carry out activities and services essential to the preservation of public order and the safety of people and property.
Fighting crime
The National Force has been operating in Rio de Janeiro since 2023. In November, former minister Flávio Dino stated that he would keep the group in Rio until January this year, when he would have a new assessment on the need to maintain the teams in the fight against criminal organizations .
In the evaluation, the measure was also extended until March 31st. This was the first extension made by the new management of the department.
The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), has asked for help from the federal government to combat organized crime, mainly militias and drug trafficking. Last year, the politician stated that organizations currently operating in Rio also have presence in other states.
“There are no longer specific criminal organizations that are here, they are there. No. Today, there are true mafias spread throughout Brazil: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ceará, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte. We are seeing this spread every day”, highlighted Castro.
GLO at ports and airports
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) issued a decree to guarantee law and order (GLO) in ports and airports in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, in November last year.
Navy personnel were responsible for assisting in the security of the ports of Rio, Itaguaí (RJ) and Santos (SP). The Air Force reinforces surveillance at the international airports of Galeão (RJ) and Guarulhos (SP).
