In the statement, Civil Defense states that the Taquari River “has been receiving significant volumes due to the heavy rains of recent days in the state and is extraordinarily exceeding its flood quota“. Residents of risk areas must look for public shelters or another place of safety.
“People who do not have alternative locations should seek information from their city’s Civil Defense about public shelters provided by city halls, escape routes and security points”, states the agency.
There are also flood warnings for the Caí and Jacuí rivers.
The last bulletin reported that 4,400 people had to leave their homes. There are 1,072 people in shelters and 3,416 homeless.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that he will visit Rio Grande do Sul this Thursday (2). He said that eight Brazilian Air Force (FAB) helicopters are prepared to operate in the state and are awaiting weather conditions to fly.
